Burundi is a small, landlocked country with economic difficulties, but with great potential in the coffee world. The popularity of Burundian coffees is growing every year, thanks in part to the integration of small farmers into larger groups that make them more competitive with larger coffee exporters.
In 2016, engineer Cassien Nibaruta built a coffee processing station in the Gitega area, which lies at an altitude of 1800 m. Cassien built the station so that every component was thought out to the last detail. Cassien developed its own system to ensure traceability and secure data collection on the origin of the coffee beans leaving the station.
Cassien's goal is to produce the highest quality coffee possible with the help of local farmers with smaller coffee plantations. Through his passion and incorporation of new technologies into his practice, he has been able to incorporate coffee processed at the Gaterama washing station into the select coffee market, which has resulted in higher incomes for local growers.
The ripe cherries of this coffee are sorted by hand on drying tables as well as by using a floater. They are then ground and fermented for 12 hours, both dry and wet.
